Start where you are
Three routes. One practical guide.
Whether you are exploring the rules, closing data gaps or preparing to buy, start with the next decision.
Does this affect us?
Understand DPPs, determine product scope and separate established rules from future measures.
Start with the fundamentals Definition → Requirements → Applicability → TimelineHow ready are we?
Find gaps in product identity, supplier evidence, integration and operating ownership.
Use the readiness checklist Implementation → Data → Architecture → ReadinessWhat should we build or buy?
Evaluate capabilities, total cost and delivery risk with an enterprise buyer’s perspective.
Evaluate your technology options Software → Selection → RFP → ImplementationThe essentials
A digital connection
to a physical product.
A Digital Product Passport connects an identified product to structured information that relevant people and systems can access. It supports informed use, repair, circularity and compliance.
A QR code can be an entry point. A useful passport also needs reliable data, appropriate access, lifecycle updates and continued availability.
Understand how a passport works →Which product?
Connect the right model, batch or item to a persistent reference.
Which information?
Materials, repair, environmental or conformity data—as required by the applicable rule.
Who can access it?
Public and protected views should reflect the rights of each user.
The EU position
Know what is settled.
Know what is still developing.
Battery passports
From 18 February 2027 for EV and LMT batteries, and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, placed on the market or put into service.
Read the battery guide →The ESPR framework
Detailed fields, identity level, access and application dates depend on the relevant product measures.
Understand ESPR →Beyond batteries
Textiles, steel, aluminium, furniture, tyres and mattresses are working-plan priorities. Adoption targets are not compliance dates.
Check product categories →Source baseline: 4 October 2026. Batteries Regulation · ESPR · Commission working plan
The Commission announced the DPP Registry and testing environment in July 2026. Infrastructure progress does not make every product subject to a passport obligation.

For enterprise buyers
Buy against evidence.
Contract for delivery.
Look beyond feature lists. Test integrations, understand billable units, define implementation acceptance and protect your exit.
Build a better DPP RFP01Require proof against your product scenario.
02Compare pricing using the same volume assumptions.
03Agree data rights, continuity and transition costs.
04Make regulatory-change responsibilities explicit.
What to do now
Start with scope.
Then follow the data.
- Document applicability. Identify product, market activity, operator and legal source.
- Map data and evidence. Find owners, source systems and supplier dependencies.
- Test a representative product. Follow identity, access, corrections and recovery end to end.
